An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before former President Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

One account, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
