Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
