"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. A host of famous fans have openly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"So everyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

However Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
