Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for New York City in First Speech
In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an bold commencement to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Challenges

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
